Ultrasound FAQs

What is an elective 3D/4D ultrasound?

Inner Child Imaging allows expectant families to see incredible 3D images of their soon-to-be-born child. To do this, we use the same ultrasound technology and equipment as leading OB/GYN practices and medical schools throughout the country. The images and video which we generate will introduce you to your child and allow you to see facial and body features which are not always recognizable in the grainy black and white 2D images usually provided by your OB/GYN. Our 3D images are extremely emotional and can provide a unique bonding experience between expectant parents and their bundles of joy months before he or she greets the world. Since this is not a diagnostic procedure, it does not take the place of an ultrasound performed by your healthcare provider, who can confirm your due date, screen for fetal anomalies and identify other pregnancy-related issues.

Is it safe?

Extensive studies performed over the past 35 years have shown that prenatal ultrasounds pose no harm to either mother or child. Your healthcare provider uses the exact same technology when performing 2D scans. If you would like further information on the safety of this procedure, take a look at this article: http://www.webmd.com/baby/news/20041202/multiple-pregnancy-ultrasounds-safe-for-child

When is the best time for my elective 3D ultrasound?

The best images of your baby can be obtained between your 24th and 34th weeks of pregnancy. Due to the fact that we do not provide diagnostic services, we require that all clients have undergone a complete diagnostic ultrasound, generally around the 20th week, by their healthcare provider prior to their session with us.

How long will my ultrasound take?

Your scan will generally take between 15 and 20 minutes, though we suggest that you allow 45-60 minutes in order to make sure that we have time to show you the best view possible and do not need to rush through your session.

Will I get a good view of my baby’s face?

In most cases, yes, however please remember that your baby is the boss. If your baby is facing down (towards the spine), for example, it may be difficult to get a clear picture of him/her. In some cases we may be able to coax your baby into a better position through the use of gentle massage or music. We will make every attempt to get you the best images possible, however every baby scans differently, depending on its gestational age, position, amount of fluid, and mother's condition. In the event that we are unable to meet your expectations we may reschedule your appointment or offer you a return visit at a reduced cost.

Will you be able to tell me if my baby is a boy or a girl? What if we do not want to know until birth?

Nearly 100% of the time we will be able to determine the sex of your baby, if you would like us to. If you would like to wait until birth, we will make every effort to hide your baby’s sex from view. Occasionally the position of the baby does not allow us to determine the sex, but this is very rare.

How should I prepare for my session?

We recommend that you stay well hydrated in the week before your scan. Most doctors suggest drinking 64 ounces of water daily throughout your pregnancy, and we agree! In order to increase the likelihood of an awake and happy baby, we suggest eating a good meal a couple of hours prior to your session and drinking one or two glasses of fruit juice 30 minutes prior to your appointment. We also recommend wearing a two-piece outfit as your sonographer will need to expose your belly in order to perform your scan.

Can I bring friends and family?

Absolutely! Our studio has seating for 10, but we can accommodate more if they do not mind standing.

Will insurance cover my 3D/4D ultrasound?

Generally, no. You may check with your specific insurance company, however Inner Child Imaging will not submit an insurance claim on your behalf. We require payment in full prior to your session. For your convenience, we accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, debit cards and cash.
